In 2018, the Kingdom participated in the forty-eighth session of the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, which was held under the slogan “Building a Common Future in a Divided World,” with a high-level delegation, and the King Khalid Charitable Foundation was able to join as an affiliate partner of the Forum as a result of its pioneering contributions to non-profit organizations.
The year 2019 witnessed, during the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, the inclusion of the Saudi Aramco gas plant in the Uthmaniyah region, among the list of “industrial beacons” that includes the world’s leading manufacturing facilities in applying the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, in a step that confirms the success and technical leadership of Saudi Aramco. Thus, it became the first company in the world in the oil and gas sector to be included in the “Industrial Lighthouses” list, and the first in the Middle East to be honored by the World Economic Forum.
As part of the forum’s annual meeting, the Kingdom signed a memorandum of understanding with the World Economic Forum to establish the Forum Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution in the Kingdom. The memorandum of understanding focused on cooperation in partnerships between the public and private sectors as well as major initiatives that focus on the future of energy, health, health care, and financial and monetary systems. And other fields, as it is considered the fifth center in the world, and seeks to be a global research and implementation organization for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and to develop practical policies for governance, It also provides training opportunities for Saudi talent. With the aim of preparing a generation of leaders in the field of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, through qualification, training, and designing fellowship programs, it also allows the integration of qualified leaders into the various global Fourth Industrial Revolution centers.
Plastic recycling
The Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) strengthened its leadership at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum 2020 by launching the Plastic Recycling Initiative (TruCircle™), to help fill the gaps in plastic recycling operations and enhance efforts in this field, as the initiative’s solutions include materials and technologies that enhance the concept of the circular economy. , including certified circular polymers resulting from chemical recycling of mixed plastic waste, certified renewable biopolymers, new polycarbonate materials manufactured from certified renewable raw materials, and mechanically recycled polymers.
The World Economic Forum also announced the inclusion of the Khurais facility on the list of global “industrial beacons.” This will be the second Saudi Aramco facility to join this list recognized by the World Economic Forum and includes the world’s leading manufacturing facilities in applying Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, in a step that confirms the success and technical leadership that Aramco enjoys.

The year 2022 witnessed the Kingdom’s participation, through a high-level delegation, in the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, which was entitled “History at a Turning Point: Government Policies and Business Strategies,” where the delegation presented meaningful dialogues and effective solutions to global challenges, including climate change, economic conditions, Global supply security shortages, geopolitical risks, energy security, as well as the ongoing risks of the Covid-19 pandemic.

As part of the activities of the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum 2023, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hosted a dialogue session entitled “Towards a flexible interconnection of urban development resources” with major international stakeholders in the public and private sectors and from regional and global organizations, during which speakers discussed ways to sustain future cities and exchanged experiences and ideas about… The emergence of new models for the flexibility of urban cities, and how to cooperate to design and develop them and make these models available to the whole world, in addition to how to develop new cities and current capitals to become incubating centers for innovation and technology. The National Competitiveness Center and the World Economic Forum signed, at the forum’s headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, a cooperation agreement aimed at facilitating and developing services trade in the Kingdom, and raising its competitiveness in global markets.

The Royal Commission for AlUla Governorate participated in the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum 2024 within the Kingdom’s delegation system, through a pavilion that reviewed various national trends, as well as the plans, programs and initiatives contained in AlUla Governorate. During its participation in the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum 2024, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) reviewed its efforts in smart cities at the Saudi Digital Exhibition, where visitors to the exhibition saw SDAIA’s efforts in smart cities represented by the National Platform for Smart Cities, Smart C, Smart Cities Management, etc. The platform contains live operational indicators to monitor vital sectors in the city of Riyadh to support operators in monitoring the level of services. While the “Digital Saudi Arabia” exhibition, during its participation in the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum 2024, presented to the visitors of the forum a map of digital government services based on emerging technologies and innovation, in addition to raising the level of data sharing between government agencies, and achieving integration between them, in an effort to enable and accelerate sustainable digital government transformation.
